The forgotten tribe: People with disabilities in Zimbabwe

Tsitsi Choruma

The forgotten tribe book coverThis report on a 2006 survey of the views and perspectives of people with disabilities in Zimbabwe shows that much needs to be done to reduce discrimination against, and increase the opportunities open to, people with disabilities in Zimbabwe.

The report gives a wide-ranging insight into the experiences of disabled people in Zimbabwe. It shows that people with disabilities in Zimbabwe remain the forgotten tribe. Government and civil society are failing to meet the needs of people with disabilities, while the myths and misinformation about disability so prevalent in Zimbabwean society and culture mean that discriminatory attitudes are still commonplace.

The forgotten tribe outlines the opinions and ideas of disabled people on what needs to change to address the problems they face, and outlines the lessons and a range of policy recommendations drawn from the survey findings.
