Development Worker - Advocacy and Communications (Water), one-year placement, based in Sana'a, Yemen

The successful candidate should have a degree or equivalent diploma in a relevant discipline, and education/training in environment studies or a related field (e.g. water resources).

You should have a minimum of three years’ work experience working in water and climate change issues, and conducting environmental advocacy work. Proven experience in research methodologies including critical analysis and participatory methods; working with NGOs and community-based organisations in organisational development and capacity building; liaising and networking with a range of different organisations and stakeholders; working within a geographically dispersed team with multiple demands; monitoring and evaluating environmental communications and advocacy campaigns; organising and delivering training workshops to a variety of audiences, and working in a resource poor environment where access to technology is limited is essential.

You should have knowledge of international environmental conventions and advocacy work, and training/facilitation methodologies. Good team building skills and a consensus-led approach to work; developed analytical, prioritising and networking skills; a well developed gender analysis and commitment to mainstreaming gender in all areas of work; good interpersonal, communication and report writing skills; the ability to plan and implement own work; willingness to undertake road travel in Yemen, and cultural sensitivity in an Islamic environment are also essential.

A Master’s degree in environment studies or a related field; previous experience of working in the region; experience of developing research, publications and information, education and communication materials on environmental issues; Arabic language skills or willingness to learn, and an understanding of the issues facing a newly emerging democracy are highly desirable.
