A word that bothers many (5 Aug 2008 )
"The word that bothers many, liberation, is a reality of the redemption of Christ. Liberation means the redemption of humankind, not only after death - such that they are told to 'resign yourselves in this life.' No, liberation means that there is no exploitation in this world of human beings by other human beings. Liberation means redemption that wants to free humankind from so many kinds of slavery: the slavery of illiteracy, the slavery of being hungry because of not having enough to buy food, the slavery of not having a roof over your head, of not having anywhere to live. Slavery, misery, all of this goes together."

Dust And Ashes (15 Feb 2008 )
We read in the Book of Genesis, chapter 3, that God said to Adam, after he and Eve had eaten of the forbidden fruit (the Bible doesn't say 'apple'!): "In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

Gold, red, green (26 Nov 2007 )
This has been a spectacular autumn, and not only in the countryside, writes Sister Pamela Hussey. The trees in Cavendish Square, near where I live, have had me standing and staring in amazement at the riot of colour, and even rushing to my watercolours to try and reproduce something of the brilliance: the trees on fire with the gold, red and green in each leaf. One leaf can be the subject of a painting, just to capture the colour before it has gone forever. For go it must, that is the way of nature. But we know for certain that, come the Spring, new life will be bursting out all over the place, and the whole incredible cycle will begin again.

Reflections on retirement: do nothing for at least 10 minutes a day (25 Jul 2007 )
The pocket Oxford dictionary definition for 'retire' is: ‘1 leave office or employment, esp. because of age; 2 withdraw, go away, retreat; 3 seek seclusion or shelter; 4 go to bed’.

Renewed agenda to live simply (15 Sep 2006 )
We are already in the first days of autumn - a ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ as Keats so beautifully proclaimed, though, at the time of writing the mists have yet to appear. It is a season when things begin again, schools open, workers return from their holidays with exotic things to eat for the delectation of their colleagues.

Some thoughts on A Question of Commitment (14 Mar 2006 )
There has been encouraging feedback from readers of Progressio's new Comment: it has inspired; it has amazed by its 'spread' and, for a Sister of St Clare, it 'brought back to me many of my experiences in El Salvador during the last 32 years of our mission there. Our mission was - and is - always our option for the poor and the right to life.'

Where is God? (25 Jan 2006 )
A recent article in The Tablet (God's Longing to be Human by Daniel O'Leary, 17/24 December 2005) tells of a child and her father standing in front of the crib. The child is heard musing: 'I wonder if God enjoys being a baby.'

Witness to the truth: Oscar Romero of El Salvador (31 Oct 2005 )
On Saturday 27 August, CIIR's Sister Pamela Hussey gave this talk on Archbishop Oscar Romero at the annual Greenbelt Festival.

Benedict XVI - God’s Rottweiler? (25 May 2005 )
'God’s rottweiler is the new Pope' announced the Daily Telegraph on Wednesday 20 April. But the man who came out onto the balcony on 19 April to salute the waiting crowds in St Peter’s Square after his election as the 265th Pope did not look like a human rottweiler.

A Culture Of Peace (30 Nov 2004 )
Pamela Hussey reports on her new Comment entitled 'A Culture of Peace: Women, faith and reconciliation', inspired by the faith and determination of so many women working for peace in our troubled world..
