Centro Bartolomé de las Casas

Centro Bartolomé de las Casas aims to promote an intercultural democratic society through education, research and communication. They run various projects including adult education programmes; practical, organisational and legal support to small scale farming and indigenous communities, and a publications programme.

Nicoletta Velardi is a Progressio development worker with the Centro Bartolomé de las Casas. Her work aims to strengthen the civic participation of indigenous communities by developing Intercultural training for Indigenous Leaders in communities in Cusco and Apurimac.

Centro Guamán Poma de Ayala

The Education and Communication Centre "Guamán Poma de Ayala" promotes improvement in the quality of life of the poor majority in the South Andean Region, through three programmes: Habitat and Citizenship, Local Economic Development, and Food Security.

Alexandra Torres, a Progressio development worker is working with Guamán Poma on a project to support local governments with techniques for the commericalisation of local produce.

Centro Peruano de Estudios Sociales (CEPES)

CEPES, the Peruvian centre for social studies, aims to improve the abilities and knowledge of small scale farmers and strengthen their participation in managing natural resources and the environment.

Bruno Gûemes, A Progressio development worker, is working on environmental education with small scale farmers from the Huaral Valley to help them to identify the environmental problems they are facing and identify possible ways to prevent these and reduce their impact.

COINCIDE

CONCIDE is a strategic grouping of NGOs from the Cusco region which promotes democratic participation, social inclusion and decentralisation, by carrying out training, awareness raising and broadcasting activities.

Belén Pont, a Progressio development worker, is working on a project to train social and political leaders in communities around Cusco.

Comisión de Derechos Humanos de Ica (CODEHICA)

CODEHICA (the Ica Human Rights Commission) is a coalition of 68 civil society organisations, trade unions and newly established communities. They aim to contribute to democratic governance by strengthening people's participation in processes related to development and exercising their human rights. They have projects working on Citizenship education, promotion and defense of human rights, communication and equality, and inclusion.

The commission also has a new project to support local responses to the earthquake which took place in Peru on August 15th 2007. Maria Eugenia Lancarra is working with CODEHICA on this project. She is specialist in the design and reconstruction of homes and alternative technologies in seismic zones and is working on proposals for anti-seismic alternative constructions and on local capacity building. She is based in Ica one of the worst hit areas where 44,000 homes, 80% of public buildings, roads and the infrastructure for basic services (water, hygiene and electricity) were destroyed.

Escuela para el Desarrollo

The Escuela para el Desarrollo (Development School) is an educational institution which promotes development and offers a range of courses. They promote knowledge exchange and reflection and research by development organisations and have a library which covers development, gender, planning systems, organisational management and other related issues.

Susana Araujo is a Progressio development worker supporting the Development School to train female councillors from the Ayacucho region on processes for changing local governance to include women in regional and local development.

Guarango

Gurango is an association which independently produces and distributes film and video, on the environment, development, and human rights. Guarango participates in educational, participative and advocacy audiovisual projects.

Stephanie Boyd is a Canadian filmmaker working as a Progressio development worker with Guarango. Her role is to support communities struggling to control their natural resources to communicate their messages by strengthening their media, advocacy and campaigning skills.

Instituto Bartolomé de las Casas

The Bartolomé de Las Casas Institute is a non profit organisation which was founded in 1974 by a group of professional Catholics who wanted to contribute to development in Peru from a Christian perspective of a preferential option for the poor. They provide training to Christian communities, social organisations, university students and young professionals so that they can contribute to the building of democracy and promote a process of development.

Charlotte Smith, a British Progressio development worker, works with the organisation to support good communication and networking including at an international level.

Instituto de Fomento de una Educación de Calidad (Educa)

Educa, The Institute for the Promotion of a Quality Education, is an NGO which works to improve educational quality and equality in Education in rural and urban areas in Peru. They work with headteachers, teachers, students and parents in state schools as well as with other local organisations. Their activities include training, designing and carrying out education programs, production of educational materials and participating in educational and development plans.

Progressio development worker Diana Torres is working with EDUCA in the district of San Juan de Lurigancho - a poor area of Lima. Her aim is to build democratic leadership through training a wide range of different groups in the area including local officials and residents. She aims to encourage participation in local development and to support local people to identify their priorities and develop projects.

Proética - Consejo Nacional para la Ética Pública

Proética, the National Public Ethics Council is an NGO which is the Peruvian office of Transparency International (a major anti-corruption network). It monitors social policy and the anti corruption activities of local governments and aims to promote transparency and good governance in public and private institutions.

Progressio development worker Florencia Diehl is working on a new project called 'Fighting corruption to fight poverty' which aims to strengthen institutions in six regions of the country to fight corruption. Her role is to develop tools to monitor and evaluate social programs and to train staff and partners on the techniques.

Pukllasunchis

The Pukllasunchis Foundation develops educational plans which benefit populations in the peripheral urban areas of Cusco and in rural zones close to the city. It tackles rural, racial and gender discrimination, from an intercultural perspective.

Oihane de Gana is a Progressio development worker who is supporting Pukllasunchis to contribute to the regional education plan for Cusco and to design training to enable groups to lobby on local development and decentralisation issues.

Peru Support Group

Peru Support Group was established in 1983. It aims to support the people of Peru, particularly those from the poorest sectors, through: increasing public awareness of Peru in Britain; promoting action in solidarity with the people of Peru, especially in the area of human rights, and encouraging links between grassroots groups.

Charlotte Smith works part time as a Progressio development worker with Peru Support Group in their office in Lima.
