Progressio - Changing Minds, Changing Lives

GAMMA

Grupo de Apoyo al Movimiento de Mujeres del Azuay (GAMMA)

The GAMMA foundation is a non-profit organisation based in Cuenca, the capital of Azuay province in Ecuador. Since the 1990s the organisation has supported the political and social movement of women in Azuay in campaigning for gender equality.

One of GAMMA´s key successes is establishing the Citizens' Observatory of Communication, which aims to enable people to understand and criticise media messages that reinforce discrimination against women or undermine human rights. Another important initiative is Mujeres en la Radio -  weekly broadcasts of radio programmes on social and political issues that affect women and children.

GAMMA works closely with development projects to make sure they take account of women's needs in their plans to ensure communities have access to basic amenities such as water and sanitation. The organisation also runs gender awareness training for health and education professionals and other individuals. Over the last few years it has been involved in organising an exhibition at the Cuenca State University on sexism in television, radio, the press and advertising.
